Most study time is spent on the two techniques that work worst: re-reading and highlighting. Both feel productive because the material starts to look familiar. Familiarity is the trap. Recognising a paragraph when it is in front of you is not the same as producing its contents in an exam hall with the page gone.
Why re-reading feels like it works
The second time through a chapter, everything reads faster and smoother. Psychologists call this fluency, and your brain misreads it as knowledge. The text is easy to process, so you conclude you must know it. What you have actually trained is the skill of reading that specific chapter. Two weeks later, asked a question with no text in sight, the fluency is worthless.
Highlighting has the same flaw with a marker attached. Deciding a sentence is important takes about a second of shallow processing, then the yellow stripe gives you a lasting visual record of effort. The effort was real; the learning mostly was not.
What active recall actually is
Active recall means answering a question from memory before you check the answer. That single act of retrieval strengthens the memory far more than another exposure to the material does. The classic demonstration is a 2006 study by Roediger and Karpicke: students who read a passage once and then took practice tests on it remembered substantially more a week later than students who read the same passage four times. The re-readers felt more confident. The testers scored higher.
This is the whole reason flashcards exist. A card is a tiny test. The front asks, you struggle for a moment, and that struggle is the point. Even failing to recall and then seeing the answer beats passively reading it, because the attempt tells your memory this item matters and needs a stronger trace.
Spaced repetition: the schedule that makes it stick
The second ingredient is timing. Memory fades on a curve; each successful recall flattens that curve, so the ideal moment to review is just before you would forget. You do not need software to model this precisely. A simple expanding schedule captures most of the benefit:
- Day 1: make the deck and run through it once, the same day you covered the material.
- Day 3: second pass. Expect to miss a few cards; that is the schedule working, not failing.
- Day 7: third pass. Most cards should come back quickly now. Slow ones get an extra run.
- Day 21: final pass before you park the deck. Anything still shaky goes into your pre-exam review pile.
Four short sessions, maybe fifteen minutes each. That beats a three-hour re-reading marathon the night before, and it leaves the night before free for sleep, which does more for recall than any technique on this page.
How to write a card worth reviewing
One idea per card
A card asking for the three functions of the liver, the enzymes involved, and the relevant diseases is really five cards wearing a trench coat. You will half-know it forever. Split it. Small cards get answered fast, graded honestly, and scheduled correctly.
One right answer
Phrase the front so exactly one answer is correct. “Describe mitochondria” invites a vague ramble you will always judge as close enough. “Which organelle produces most of the cell's ATP?” has a single answer, so you know instantly whether you got it.
Test the idea, not the wording
If a card can be answered by recognising the shape of the words on the front, it is testing your memory of the card, not of the concept. Rephrase questions in your own words, swap in a new example, or ask the question in reverse. If you copied a sentence and blanked one word out of it, you have built a recognition card, and recognition is exactly the fluency trap you were trying to escape.
The mistakes that quietly waste your reviews
- Decks that are too long. A 200-card deck for one chapter guarantees you will never finish a pass. Keep decks tight; around 30 cards per topic is enough to cover what an exam can realistically ask.
- Cards copied verbatim from the textbook. The author's sentence is optimised for reading, not recall. Writing the answer in your own words is itself a study act; skipping it throws away half the value.
- Reviewing only the cards you already know. Flipping through easy cards feels great and teaches nothing. The cards you dread are the ones paying rent. Face them first.
