Spaced repetition, for students

You studied it on Monday. Will you still know it in three weeks?

Everything you answer in VisualNote becomes a review item. It comes back after 1, 2, 5, 12 and 30 days, right before you would have forgotten it, and the whole thing fits in about 15 minutes a day.

How the reviews work

  1. Study a lesson

Put the labels back on your visual from memory, answer one question per step, explain it in your own words. Every answer is saved.

  2. It comes back on its own

After 1, 2, 5, 12 and 30 days the same label or question shows up again in Today. You grade yourself: Didn't know, Almost or Knew it.

  3. Keep the streak

Any study counts for the day. Pick up to 3 rest days a week and the streak doesn't break on those.

The lesson

Recall first, then the question

Each step of a lesson asks you to put the labels back on your visual from memory, then checks it stuck with one question. At the end you explain the topic in your own words, typed or out loud. You don't make a single flashcard: what you answered here is what comes back later.

The end of the Exam in VisualNote: Noty celebrating, 7.5 out of 10 and passed, marks topic by topic with Errors and alpha at 5.5 in red, and a note that one topic comes back tomorrow in Today
After the Exam

The topic you got wrong is back tomorrow

In the Exam, Noty asks 5 open questions and marks each answer out of 10. Any topic under 6 becomes a review card in Today, so the thing you fumbled on Tuesday is waiting for you on Wednesday.

Rest days that don't count against you

A day counts when you study: a lesson, a review, a quiz or a chat on your notes. Adding a page doesn't. Choose up to 3 rest days a week for the days you have practice or a shift, and the streak waits for you.

What the free plan gives you

Reviews are free: every answer becomes a review item, with up to 18 a day (about 15 minutes) and 5 new ones a day. Today, the streak and rest days are free too. The free plan also gives you 3 visuals, the first lesson whole, the first step of every other lesson and 1 Exam a day.

Questions students ask

What is a spaced repetition app?

It shows you something again just before you would forget it, at growing gaps, instead of all at once the night before. In VisualNote the gaps are 1, 2, 5, 12 and 30 days. Each time, you grade yourself with Didn't know, Almost or Knew it.

Do I have to make my own flashcards?

No. Everything you answer becomes a review item on its own: the labels you put back on your visual, the lesson and checkpoint questions, quiz questions and flashcards. You study the lesson once and the reviews follow from it.

How long do reviews take each day?

At most 18 items a day, which is about 15 minutes, with no more than 5 new ones. Today puts them in order with the rest of your plan, so you can do them on the bus and be done.

What happens if I skip a day?

You can set up to 3 rest days a week, and those don't break your streak. If you want a nudge, turn on a reminder by email or phone notification at the hour you pick. It only arrives when something is due or an exam is near, and never after you already studied that day.

Is the spaced repetition free?

Yes. Reviews, Today, the streak and rest days are all on the free plan, no credit card. Plus adds every lesson whole, checkpoints, a streak freeze each month and a vacation pause.
